Business Self-Defence
Introduction

In our 'always on' business world, with 24/7 Internet connections, businesses are at real risk from external threats. This could take the form of an electronic break-in to capture business sensitive documents or disruption caused by virus, malware and other such nasties.
Small businesses are particular at risk as they lack the expertise to properly configure security on their systems and certainly are not in a position to actively monitor such things.
Before we explore the various aspects of security and protection methods, one import aspect is to determine the value of your business (and personal) data and why you should protect it.
Why would anyone target my business?
We hear time and time again (especially from small business) "Why would anyone be interested in my business or computer equipment?". Well, firstly what may be apparently unimportant to you, may be 'gold' to someone else. This is especially true for any personal information including bank details etc as this is the primary material used for identity theft. Secondly, an attacker may not be interested in your data, but may only wish to acquire control of your computer systems to launch his attacks, but from your computers, with potentially dire consequences for your business.
From a non-computer perspective, seemly un-important bits of paper, letters, statements or invoices may seen innocent, but put together can create the hard copy needed to fake your identity and apply for a £10,000 loan in your business name.
The stark reality is that there are thousands of criminally intent organisations constantly trying to acquire bank details, login credentials to online services such as Paypal or to acquire control of computers. The problem is that those intent on criminal activity will often go for the easy (or soft) targets, which are typically small businesses and individuals. Security awareness for business people along with suitable action is critical in the ongoing fight to keep your business safe. You need to take these matters seriously.
